The great people of EVERY state and territory have officially chosen Donald Trump as the Republican party’s nominee for president! The delegate roll call at the RNC on July 19 means that delegates have cemented their support for Trump!
Sure, night one of the Republican National Convention was pretty dramatic, but night two, July 19, was incredibly important. The night kicked off at 5:30pm sharp with the GOP Convention Roll Call, the time honored tradition in which each state and territory announces which candidate they are nominating for the Republican party’s ticket. And that candidate was Donald Trump, 70!
Even though Trump was the presumptive GOP nominee before this night, there were months of primary elections prior to his takeover. One by one, in alphabetical order, the states and territories read aloud the number of delegates they were giving to Trump, and to other candidates if applicable. But tonight goes to Trump, and Trump only — the people have spoken! The delegates have nominated Trump as the Republican nominee for president in the general election, and effectively, Mike Pence as the vice presidential nominee. Hear, hear!
The entirety of the states and territories didn’t even get to speak before Trump won the nomination! The candidate received enough delegates to clinch the nomination by the state of New York, where his son, Donald Trump Jr., presented him with the final necessary delegate. What a beautiful moment for that family.
Though Trump is considered the official GOP nominee, the process is far from over. This doesn’t mean his spot is 100% secured. While the delegates have spoken, the Republican party still has to officially nominate Trump and Pence on the last day of the convention!
