Hollywood is in mourning as one of its most beloved writer/directors as Garry Marshall has died at age 81. His career spanned over five decades and he left such an indelible mark on the world of comedy on TV and in film. He created and co-wrote many episodes of small screen hits like 1970’s classics Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley starring his sister Penny Marshall, and Mork and Mindy just to name a few. Yep, he’s the man who helped introduce the late, great Robin Williams to the world!
As a film director he made Julia Roberts, 48, a star in 1990’s Pretty Woman and continued to work with her on 1999’s Runaway Bride and last April’s Mother’s Day. His star-making power with young actresses also hit paydirt when he directed Anne Hathaway, 33, in The Princess Diaries and its sequel. Garry had a special talent for working with women, especially with the nearly all-female cast of 2016’s Mother’s Day, as well the beloved relationship comedies Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve. He also used his talent to cross generations of Hollywood leading ladies, directing Goldie Hawn, 70 in the 1987 comedy Overboard and going on to direct her daughter Kate Hudson, 37, in 2004’s Raising Helen as well as Mother’s Day. Boy, he was so brilliant when it came to working with the most awesome ladies in Hollywood.
But as adept as Garry was with comedies, he could also make us cry like there’s no tomorrow. He directed the beloved Bette Midler film Beaches and really, who can forget the end of that film without bursting out in tears?!
Garry’s career dates back to the early 1960’s, and during that decade he wrote for such classic comedies as The Lucy Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show and from 1970-1975 he wrote for The Odd Couple.
Garry leaves behind his wife Barbara and three children. His cause of death has not yet been released.
