Donald Trump, Jr. gave a commanding speech at the Republican National Convention on July 19, speaking about his love for his father, and his father’s work ethics. Don Jr. used his platform to slam the rich and elite! But wait — isn’t he rich and elite?
Donald Trump, Jr., 38, gave what many pundits were calling the best speech of the Republican National Convention thus far. While little sister Tiffany Trump, 22, spoke emotionally about the sweet memories she’s shared with their father, Donald Trump, 70, Don Jr. didn’t take any time to be sentimental. His speech was about business, and nothing but. After all, he’s a Trump!
Don Jr. spoke at length about how his father, the now-official Republican nominee for president, instilled in him and his siblings the importance of hard work, as well as how to succeed in ways that weren’t necessarily monetary. His father made himself and all his siblings stay grounded, despite their luxe upbringings, saying “we weren’t raised [to be] elite.” Trump Sr. apparently speaks to everyone he works with, not just the executives, and he treats them all equally. He told the kids that it doesn’t matter if someone went somewhere prestigious like Wharton; it was more about what they knew, and how they used that.
“We didn’t learn from people with MBAs; we learned from people who had doctorates in common sense,” Don Jr. told the roaring audience of delegates on the convention hall floor. “It’s why we’re the only children of billionaires just as comfortable in D10 Caterpillars as we are in fancy cars.”
What Don Jr. did tonight was spectacular. Whereas Tiffany’s speech made voters see Donald as her sweet, caring father, a human being, his son went headfirst into reminding voters that Trump is first and foremost a shrewd businessman — one he believes will fight to help conservatives fight high taxes, and — say it with us, now — make America great again. He was powerful, but reassuring; while he told the audience that his father was a fighter, attacking the snobby elite made him seem more connected to the middle class. Genius!
