Uh oh! It looks like Taylor Swift has been allegedly trying to stop her secretly recorded call from getting out since Feb.! Her attorney reportedly sent a legal letter demanding Kanye West ‘destroy’ the tape, but Kim Kardashian leaked it anyway! So, will they get sued? Here’s the scoop.
Kim Kardashian, 35, leaked a phone call between Taylor Swift, 26, and Kanye West, 39, on July 17 that proves Kanye reached out to get Taylor’s opinion on his controversial song “Famous.” While the internet has become obsessed with the video, taking sides and arguing about who’s right and who’s wrong, Kim and Kanye may have some bigger problems. Turns out, releasing that tape was illegal.
Kanye has been talking about the existence of the recording since Feb. when Taylor bashed his song at the Grammy Awards. Tay allegedly took some precautions to make sure it never saw the light of day. TMZ obtained the apparent legal letter her attorney sent Yeezy, and they made it very clear that they wanted it to remain secret.
“Demand is hereby made that you immediately destroy all such recordings, provide us of assurance that this has been done, and also assurance that these recordings have not been previously disseminated,” the document read, according to TMZ. Clearly Kim ignored the warning.
Kanye may be relieved to have the public know the truth about the situation, but he and Kim may have to pay dearly for it. In Califronia, it’s illegal to record a phone call without both parties’ consent. So if Taylor didn’t know Ye was recording her, she has legal grounds to sue him for releasing that tape. Though Taylor hasn’t filed a lawsuit yet, she’s clearly irate about it in a new Instagram rant, so it could happen. The punishment for such an offense is usually a hefty fine, but maybe it was worth it to Kanye to pay up in order to clear his name. We can’t wait to see what happens next!
