After three officers were killed and three seriously injured, the police of Baton Rouge, Louisiana spent hours searching for additional gunmen. Now they are confirming that there was only one, and that he is dead.
Three police officers were killed and multiple others injured after a gunman with an assault rifle opened fire on them on Sunday morning, July 17. Although there were many rumors that the gunman did not work alone, Louisiana State Police later confirmed that there had only been one and that he was killed on the scene, reports CNN.
Police revealed that the suspect was dressed in all-black, and that he was also wearing a mask at the time of the attack. It is being reported that the mask was to help conceal the shooter’s identity, which could mean he was hoping to survive the assault on police officers. The shooter was first reported to police as a suspicious man standing behind a beauty supply store. It was later reported that he was at a gas station, and after engaging with police he was killed in a shoot out.
Originally, police did approach press to reveal that they believed there were secondary suspects involved. The Sheriff told the people of Baton Rouge that they should be on the lookout for anyone wearing all-black or army fatigue and possibly carrying “long” weapons. Thankfully, it turned out that there weren’t any other gunmen or suspects involved in this horrific attack.
The identities of the police officers who were killed have yet to be revealed as their family is notified of the tragedy. In a press conference, a heartbroken Governor Edwards revealed that those killed were two police officers and one sheriff’s deputy. He also confirmed that three other officers were injured with one in very critical condition, “fighting for his life.” So sad.
Our thoughts remain with the victims, as well as their family, friends, and loved ones during this very difficult time.
