A military coup broke out in Turkey on July 15, with soldiers and tanks attempting to seize control, protestors, gunfire and explosions taking hold of the streets. Meanwhile, the Turkish president attempted to take back his country. See the haunting photos from the streets of Istanbul by clicking here.
Martial law was declared in the country, which has been taken over by the military at least three times in the past 50 years. While there are few facts on what sparked the uprising, videos and photos of the protesting and military forces are coming out in droves on the internet, so the world can only wonder what exactly is happening. In these disturbing photos you can see military factions trying to secure areas while supporters of Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, protested in Istanbul’s Taksim square.
Earlier, President Erdogan flew into Istanbul Ataturk Airport, according to a report by The New York Times. This was a SERIOUS indication the coup was, in fact, failing. There have been hints that leaders of the coup did not have a tight enough grip on all of Turkey. And there were also reports that some of the military leaders had been arrested, with 120 soldiers arrested.
The president used FaceTime from an undisclosed location to broadcast messages asking the public to resist the attempted coup. “There is no power higher than the power of the people. Let them do what they will at public squares and airports,” President Erdogan said.
Turkish TV station NTV claimed, citing the prosecutor’s office in Ankara, that an estimated 42 people had been killed overnight in the Turkish capital.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the citizens of Turkey today, just one day after the violent terrorist attack in Nice, France on Bastille Day and only a few months after an explosion in Turkey claimed 32 lives.
