Is ANYONE going to the 2016 Olympics? Athletes like Rory McIlroy and LeBron James have dropped out of the games to avoid catching the Zika virus. Now, Lindsey Vonn says she won’t go to Rio because she’s too afraid of the disease!
At this point, someone can count on two hands the number of star athletes skipping the 2016 Olympics Games over Zika. LeBron James, 31, isn’t going. Neither is Jason Day, 28. Well, it’s time to add another one. Lindsey Vonn, 31, has cancelled her flight to Brazil and unpacked her bags, saying she’d rather stay in the U.S!
“I was going to [go,] but I think with the Zika and everything, it’s probably just better that I watch from home,” Lindsey admitted to PEOPLE magazine on July 12 while attending Under Armour’s debut of its UA Crossback Bra. In fact, if the Winter Olympics were taking place in Brazil, Lindsey (a gold medal winning skier) said she’d consider sitting them out. “I’m not sure, honestly, what I would decide.”
“I think I would still go, but that would definitely be in the back of my mind throughout the entire two weeks of the games,” Lindsey said. “It’s definitely tough for the athletes, for sure.” Lindsey also said that “some people are [nervous,] some people aren’t. Definitely some sports are more at risk than others, but for the most part, all the Olympians are pretty excited about Rio despite everything.”
Well, not every Olympian. Rory McIlroy, 27, the PGA Championship-winning golfer, has said that he’s not going to compete in the Rio games. “After speaking with those closest to me, I’ve come to realize that my health and my family’s health comes before anything else,” he said.
LeBron told his teammates that he’s not likely going, according to USA Today. Even NBC’s Savannah Guthrie, 44, is avoiding Brazil. Since the Zika virus has been linked to severe birth defects, the pregnant TODAY co-host is not going to risk her baby’s health.
While Lindsey won’t be there in person, she’ll still be glued to the Games when they kick off on Aug. 5. “I’m looking forward to seeing Michael Phelps and Missy Franklin and all those guys,” Lindsey said. “I’m a big fan of gymnastics and tennis – my friend Caroline [Wozniacki]‘s playing. I’ve never watched fencing before, but I’m friends with Miles [Chamley-Watson], so I’m actually really excited to watch it.”
Do you think Lindsey made the right decision, HollywoodLifers? If you had a chance to go down to Rio to watch the 2016 Olympics in person, would you do it?
