Zero to hero! Jake Arrieta has been given the ESPY for Best Breakthrough Athlete of 2016. The Cy Young winning, superstar Chicago Cubs ace was awarded for his amazing pitching last year.
Jake Arrieta, 30, can add another award to his impressive trophy case having been named the Best Breakthrough Athlete at ESPN’s 2016 ESPY Awards. The pitcher truly had an amazing year and it is understandable why he was awarded with the breakout honor. Bravo Jake, well done!
Jake was unable to attend the 2016 ESPY Awards but that didn’t stop fans from awarding the ace pitcher with the honor of Breakthrough Athlete. It is not easy to go from virtually unknown to the level of superstardom but Jake has done just that. Jake had 22 wins and only 6 losses last year. His 1.76 ERA and 236 strikeouts was enough to earn him the Cy Young award and catapult him into the limelight.
Jake’s standout year launched his profile making him clearly the obvious choice for this prestigious honor. Jake beat out UFC and MMA fighter, Conor McGregor, snowboarder Chloe Kim and NBA rookie of the year, Karl-Anthony Towns, who were all nominated for the award.
It was a night of stars at the 2016 ESPY Awards. Russell Wilson made his debut as a married man with his gorgeous wife Ciara and Kobe Bryant arrived in style with his wife Vanessa Bryant who just announced another little one on the way. Congrats guys!
Jake winning Best Breakthrough Athlete was one of many big honors of the night. Justin Timberlake was also on hand to present Icon Awards to three huge athletes who are retiring from their sports. Abby Wambach joins Peyton Manning and Kobe who all earned Icon Awards for their dedication and excellence in sports. Kobe retired after an amazing year with the Los Angeles Lakers and Peyton stepped away from quarterbacking football after bringing a Super Bowl win to the city of Denver.
