Two police officers on patrol around 1:00am were driving down Cullen Boulevard in Houston, when they reportedly saw a man standing in the middle of the road, waving a revolver in the air. Both officers stopped and got out of the car, and reportedly told the man, identified by his wife as Alva, to drop the weapon and show them his hands.
A witness also told Alva to put down the gun, according to Houston police. Both officers shot Alva when he refused to put down the revolver, and then pointed it at them. He died at the scene. Social media users are skeptical about the shooting, as there is no footage available to prove that the officers’ accounts are true. Many are reporting that Alva was shot 10 times, though that figure has yet to be confirmed. Both officers are now under investigation for the shooting; they were wearing body cams during the altercation.

Alva’s shooting comes in the same week that the nation has been devastated by horrific gun violence targeting the black community. Both Philando Castile and Alton Sterling were killed by police in separate shootings, sparking massive outrage and protest. Police protecting a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest in Dallas, Texas, were massacred, along with several protestors, by a sniper on July 7.
