The greatest honor any athlete can be called upon to do is to represent one’s country during international competition. There is no larger world stage than the Olympics and the 2016 competition will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Before American athletes can get their passport stamped they first must qualify for the big games. The 2016 U.S. Olympic track and field team will be decided by competition held during the trials in Eugene, Oregon during the first week of July. In order to earn that trip to Rio, American athletes will need to best the competition from all over the country and earn a top three finish. However, for the events with relays (men’s and women’s 100m and 400m), up to six athletes can earn spots on the Track and Field team to represent America. The trials featured during the competition on July 8th will include Men’s Discus Throw final from 6-8 pm EST and then, from 8-9pm EST, patriotic sports fanatics will get to enjoy Women’s 100m Hurdles and Men’s Steeplechase finals. So there is lots of different action ahead to satisfy the most avid Track and Field fan.
There are many great athletes to keep an eye on during these trials. A few notable veterans include Olympian Natasha Hastings, 29, who medaled in the 2008 Olympics and Allyson Felix, 30, who will also be looking to add to her impressive collection of 6 Olympic medals. Good luck ladies!
