Jesse Williams, AKA Dr. Jackson Avery on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, has responded with a shocking tweet to the backlash and petition surrounding his BET Awards speech. Check out his reaction to the petition to get him fired right here.
Jesse Williams, 34, spoke out on July 6 about the petition that’s trying to get him fired from Grey’s Anatomy, and he has more or less called anyone who signs it “[in]sane”. See his angry tweet right here!
Jesse tweeted, “Because you keep incessantly promoting their cowardly intolerance! Not a single sane sentence in their claim. NotOne.” Whoa!
As we previously told you, showrunner Shonda Rhimes has debunked rumors that Jesse will be fired from Grey’s after fans freaked out. “Um, people? Boo don’t need a petition. #shondalandrules,” she tweeted on July 4. It does indeed!
Still, the movement to publicly shame Jesse for his comments has gained huge support. The petition, which is now at over 23,000 signatures, states, “Upon receiving a humanitarian award at the BET awards, Jesse Williams released a cascade of inappropriate, unprofessional and racist commentary against police officers and Caucasians. Had any one of his offensive words been said by any other race other than an African American, they would’ve been publicly shamed, fired from whatever job they had, lost endorsements, advertisers, etc…This is a blatant slap in the face to the entire human race…Jesse needs to ‘sit down’ and contemplate the violence he fostered against all races and police officers.”
“This invention called whiteness uses and abuses us,” Jesse said in his BET speech. “Burying black people out of sight and out of mind while extracting our culture, our dollars, our entertainment like oil — black gold, ghettoizing and demeaning our creations then stealing them, gentrifying our genius and then trying us on like costumes before discarding our bodies like rinds of strange fruit.”
