Both Serena and Venus Williams have now advanced to the Semi-Finals at Wimbledon 2016! Will there be a sisterly showdown between the two tennis powerhouses in the tournament finals?
Venus Williams, 36, triumphantly reached the Wimbledon Semi-Finals on July 5 after beating unseeded Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan. At 36, Venus has now become the oldest Grand Slam semi-finalist in 22 years! And now there’s another hurdle she may have to jump: facing off against sister Serena Williams, 34, in the Ladies’ Singles Finals! Will that match happen?
It’s about to get real at Wimbledon! Serena beat out Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia on July 5 to advance to the semi-finals, and now both sisters have opponents to crush on Thursday, July 7. Serena will face Russia’s Elena Vesnina and Venus will take on Germany’s Angelique Kerber. If the Williams sisters win those matches, we’ll be seeing them as challengers in the finals on July 9. Amazing. But, according to Serena, they’re not freaking out about it yet.
“We don’t really talk too much about it but we are playing doubles later, so we are just happy to be in the semi-finals,” Serena told BBC Sport. “It will be great. Venus is such a tough opponent I want her to win so bad — not in the final if I am there, but if I’m not, I do.”
Tough opponent is an understatement! Venus has won five Wimbledon finals (2000, 2001, 2005, 2007 and 2008), and a sixth win is definitely in her grasp. This is her first Grand Slam semi-final since the 2010 US Open! Think of all this incredible woman has accomplished, and how she’s done it all while struggling with a serious autoimmune disorder, Sjogren’s Disease. Her 2011 diagnosis hindered her game, but she’s back out on top!
“I love playing the game,” Venus told BBC Sport. “When you’re winning matches it makes it that much sweeter.” So which sister will win if they make it to the Ladies’ Single Finals on July 9? We’re so excited to find out!
