Joey’s eight-year run as King of Coney Island was ended by Matt in 2015, in what may be considered the biggest upset in competitive eating history. Joey gulped down 60, but Matt was able to win by eating 62. Matt is currently ahead of Joey in the Major League Eating world rankings. Which one of these chompin’ champs will be the top dog at the end of the day?
The No. 3 best eater in the world, Miko Sudo, 30 successfully defended her title in 2015, devouring 38 hot dogs in under 10 minutes. Will she go back-to-back-to-back? Or will Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas, 48, deliver a venomous bite and take the crown?
Though he lost in 2015, Joey is still in the history books in Coney Island. He set a record in 2013 by devouring 69 hot dogs (and buns!) in an epic display of gastronomic fortitude. In 2014, he came close to repeating that feat by swallowing 61 Nathan’s franks. Though he didn’t break the record, he scored the victory and managed to propose to his girlfriend. Win-win!
The event, that takes place in Coney Island, New York City, has been held every year since about 1972 in conjunction with Independence Day. But as legend has it, the first ever contest took place in 1916 when four immigrants held a hot dog eating contest at Nathan’s Hot Dog stand in Coney Island to decide who was the most patriotic!
Who’s going to win, HollywoodLifers? Do you think Joey’s jaws will lead to victory? Will Matt munch the competition? Are you craving a hot dog?
