What a race! Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte, our best swimming hopes for the Rio Olympics, showed why they are the best with an epic battle in the water in the 200m Individual Medley at the US Trials on July 1. Michael won it this time, but it was oh so close!
This sets us up nicely for the Rio Olympics in August! Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte, both 31, resumed their rivalry in the pool on July 1 at the US Olympic trials in Omaha, Nebraska. Michael just edged out his challenger by inches, but you get the feeling if that pool was a little bigger Ryan might’ve caught him. Watch the full race below!
Michael and Ryan were competing in their final meet in the 200m Individual Medley, which Ryan holds world record for. Their rivalry has been likened to the greatest rivalries in sport, ever since they first started racing against each other when they were just in their early teens. And it shows the two haven’t lost their cutting edge just yet!
Michael got off to a flying start, easing himself into the front and showing why he will be the man to beat this summer at the Games. Ryan was a little slow off the mark, but he seemed to effortlessly catch-up with Michael the longer the race went on.

Eventually, we got the epic finish we had hoped for. With Ryan gaining rapidly on Michael, who was on the lead, it looked like the former champ was going to catch the now 5-time Olympian. But Michael just about held off his teammate to secure the win by inches.
It really does get us all excited for what’s in store when the Olympics come around on August 6. If these two continue to swim like they’re doing, the US team should be in for a impressive medal haul.
