California is making big steps toward comprehensive gun control! Six new bills were signed into law on July 1 by Gov. Jerry Brown, and the results will be dramatic, including more thorough background checks and more. Here’s the scoop.
This is a huge deal! California Governor Jerry Brown, 78, signed six new bills on July 1 that will make gun control a lot harsher in the state. Big changes including more thorough background checks are officially happening! We have all the details, right here.
The Democratic Governor was handed a sweeping package of laws dealing with gun control on June 30, and the next day he signed 6 out of the 11 proposed, meaning that big changed are coming our way. “My goal in signing these bills is to enhance public safety by tightening our existing laws in a responsible and focused manner, while protecting the rights of law-abiding gun owners,” he explained. Here’s what he approved, and what he denied.
Approved: There will now be more thorough background checks when people buy not only guns, but the ammunition for them. The approved bills also included those that banned the sale of semiautomatic rifles that have bullet buttons which let ammunition magazines be easily detached and replaced. It will also ban magazines with more than 10 bullets and restrict loaning guns to people in your family.
Vetoed: Jerry did not sign bills that let the government use restraining orders to decide who might be dangerous and take guns away. Another would have allowed co-workers, mental health workers and school officials to take out a “gun violence restraining order” for people considered dangerous to themselves and others. One of the other bills would force people making guns at home to register them and require a report of lost or stolen guns.
