This is so scary. An American newlywed couple who were caught in the middle of the Istanbul Ataturk airport suicide attack shared their horrific experience on Twitter. Read the graphic tweets right here.
What a terrifying way to end a honeymoon. Newlyweds Steven Nabil and his wife were on their way back to New York after honeymooning in Greece when bombers attacked Istanbul’s Ataturk airport on June 28, and he decided to share an entire recount of their harrowing near-death situation on Twitter.
In a collection of frantic tweets, Steven explained just how close he and his wife were to losing their lives on that terrifying night. “My wife was sitting at nero cafe while i went 3rd floor to get food from sabbaro. Heard shots ran fast toward her.people,” he wrote. “Came down the stairs to see the court empty and the terrorist firing toward us….we then took cover in a closet inside a hair salon. The 45 minutes we were sitting ducks waiting to find out who will open the door.”
We can only imagine how absolutely frightening it was for Steven and his wife to wait out the attack, not knowing if they’d make it out alive. He recalled it as the “longest 45 min ever,” also sharing that he had to beg his wife to calm down so she wouldn’t attract any of the attackers.
After sitting in terror as they heard blast after blast — and knowing that they weren’t far from the attackers — Steven and his wife miraculously made it out alive. Steven said there was “blood everywhere,” also sharing a picture from the horrific aftermath.

At least 41 people were killed in the rampage, when three suicide attackers stormed the airport around 10 p.m. local time. Two of the gunmen fired automatic weapons at a security checkpoint before detonating explosives inside the airport, while the third set off a bomb in the parking lot. Among the 41 who were killed in the attack were 13 foreigners and between 10 and 13 foreign nationals, Turkish officials have said. Along with those who lost their lives, more than 230 people were injured, the AP reports.
Although Steven and his wife successfully hid admit the attack, he did say his wife was injured, as they were “face to face with the attacker” at one point. They’re safe and sound now, but Steven couldn’t help tweeting, “We barely made it.”
