Turkish justice minister Bekir Bozdag first confirmed the horrifying news, when preliminary reports stated that 10 people were dead. “Ten people have been killed according to a preliminary toll,” Justice Minister Bozdag said, according to the Associated Press. “According to the information I was given, a terrorist at the international terminal entrance first opened fire with a Kalashnikov and then blew himself up.”
Turkey has been rocked by a series of terror attacks within the past few months leading up to the one at Istanbul Ataturk. A terrorist detonated a suicide bomb on the tarmac at another airport in Istanbul, Sabiha Gokcen, in December 2015, killing an airport employee. Terrorists attacked an area popular with tourists in Istanbul in January 2016. At this moment, the US State Department issued a travel warning for Americans in Turkey.
