Cormac McCarthy…R.I.P? The legendary author of such books as ‘Blood Meridian,’ ‘The Road’ and ‘No Country for Old Men’ was reportedly dead from a stroke on June 28, but is Cormac really dead?
One of the greatest voices in American literature has been silenced…or has it? Cormac McCarthy, the 82-year-old novelist and U.S. National Book Award winner, is supposedly dead. Yet, before fans start hugging their copies of All The Pretty Horses, this shocking cliffhanger may have a happy ending.
Yes, Cormac is still alive. Phew! He just happens to be the latest victim of time-honored tradition of the Internet Death Hoax. It all started on June 28 when a Twitter account impersonating his publisher said Cormac had passed, according to Entertainment Weekly. “URGENT,” @AKnopfNews, an account not related to publisher Alfred A. Knopf, tweeted, “Author Cormac McCarthy dies for [sic] stroke at 82.”
While Twitter went into a panic, Paul Bogaards, director of publicity for Knopf, confirmed that Cormac was still with us. His death is “not true,” Paul said, and @AKnopfNews is a “rogue account” of “someone impersonating Knopf.” After the cat was out of the bag, @AKnopfNews admitted that they were a prankster, tweeting “This account is hoax created by Italian journalist Tommasso Debenedetti. McCarthy is alive and well.”
Penguin Random House, the company that own Knopf and puts out Cormac’s books – like The Road, Outer Dark, and The Border Trilogy — even had a laugh about this. “Don’t believe everything your read on the Internet,” the company’s official Twitter posted. “Cormac McCarthy is alive and well and still doesn’t care about Twitter.” Hilarious!
Fans need a good laugh. After all the heartbreaking celebrity deaths that have happened in 2016 – from David Bowie to Alan Rickman to Prince to Pat Summitt, the last things fans want to experience is yet another tragic loss. However, as long as there are celebrities, there will be celebrity death hoaxes.
It seems like the biggest stars fall victim to these horrible pranks from time to time. Someone claimed Jennifer Lopez was dead in 2014, the same year someone said Miley Cyrus had passed on. It also seems that Betty White, dies every other month, and the Hollywood legend needs to prove that she’s still alive.
Are you glad that Cormac McCarthy’s not dead, HollywoodLifers? Are you relieved it was all a hoax?
