Delonte West, are you okay? The ex-NBA player and LeBron James’s former teammate was spotted begging for change on the streets of Maryland on June 26. Does this mean Delonte is broke and homeless?
There was one time when Delonte West, 32, stood shoulder-to-shoulder with LeBron James, 31. However, Delonte’s days of being part of the Cleveland Cavaliers are far behind him, and fans were alarmed when he was seen asking people for money on the streets!
Delonte was spotted hanging out in his hometown of Prince George’s County, Maryland on June 26, according to The Root. The former NBA player was walking up and down the median strip of St. Barnabas Road with a cup and cardboard sign in his hand. A passer-by snapped a picture of him begging and posted it online. This led many to believe that the once Cavs star was homeless!
Not so! As it turns out, Delonte was asking for change – but it wasn’t for him. “I was helping a homeless man in my neighborhood that’s paralyzed from [the] neck down,” Delonte said in a statement to MediaTakeOut. “I parked my car and got out to help because it was 90-degree weather and I was feeling blessed at the moment for just having legs.”
That’s incredibly sweet of Delonte! Though, he can’t blame people for being worried. His wellbeing has been on the minds of his fans ever since he was spotted wandering the streets of Houston while barefoot in Feb. 2016. A Texan fan approached Delonte in a Jack In The Box parking lot and asked him if he was, in fact, Delonte. “I used to be,” he replied, “but I’m not about that life anymore.”
Delonte last played with the NBA in 2012 as part of the Dallas Mavericks. He joined the Texas Legends in the NBA-D league but the team waived him at the end of the 2015 season following an injury. The hard times haven’t stopped there, as there have been reports that Delonte suffers from bipolar disorder, according to The Root. His late-night walk to Jack In The Box in Houston was caused because, while reportedly staying at a treatment center, he was given the wrong medication, which made him hallucinate. He was reportedly moved to a different facility to get the help he needs.
Are you glad that Delonte says he’s not homeless, HollywoodLifers? What do you think about him asking for money for his paralyzed friend?
