Whoa — Chelsea Handler has revealed she had two abortions at the age of 16 in an emotional essay for ‘Playboy’ magazine. She admits she was in a very bad stage in life and acted irresponsibly, but is thankful she had the legal right to abortions.
Chelsea Handler, 41, has spoken out in the new Freedom Issue of Playboy magazine. The comedian admits that she “hated” her parents and was “having unprotected sex” at the age of sixteen — and it led to her undergoing two abortions in the same year. Check out her heart-wrenching essay right here.
Chelsea opens up in an essay titled “My Choice” in Playboy magazine’s Freedom Issue, painting a somber picture of her sixteenth year. “When I got pregnant at the age of 16, getting an abortion wasn’t the first idea that popped into my unripened brain,” she writes. “I was going through a very bad stage in my life. I hated my parents and I was having unprotected sex with my boyfriend…when I got pregnant I just thought, Why not? I can have a baby. Of course, the idea that I would have a child and raise it by myself at that age [was] ridiculous,” Chelsea remembers. So heartbreaking.
The Chelsea Lately star reveals that getting an abortion was a huge relief to her. “My parents [acted] like parents for one of the very first times in my life and took me to Planned Parenthood,” she writes. “I felt parented, ironically, while I was getting an abortion. And when it was over, I was relieved in every possible way.” Chelsea says that her second abortion was harder to get. “I had two [abortions] the same year, impregnated by the same guy. I didn’t have the money the second time. I had to scrape together the $230 to pay Planned Parenthood…I’m grateful that I came to my senses and was able to get an abortion legally without risking my health or bankrupting myself or my family.” The Supreme Court struck down the Texas abortion clinic law yesterday, June 27, and Chelsea mentions in her essay that she hopes the country can continue moving forward in such a way.
Finally, Chelsea insists that she has no regrets about her abortions. “I’m 41 now. I don’t ever look back and think, God, I wish I’d had that baby,” she writes.
