Wow — we’re absolutely speechless after watching the epic Prince tribute at the June 26 BET Awards. Sheila E., Jennifer Hudson, The Roots, and Stevie Wonder commanded the stage while performing the legend’s biggest hits throughout the night. Get all the details here!
The epic Prince tribute occurred at various moments throughout the entirety of the BET Awards, but it started with an emotional performance by The Roots and Eryka Badu. Of course, the stage was adorned with flashes of purple everywhere, and it was amazing.
They sang “Dorothy Parker.” Then, when that song concluded, Bilal came out and sang “The Beautiful Ones.” During his performance, he got so into it that he was rolling around on stage and screaming in the microphone — talk about dedication!
Later in the show, Tori Kelly and Stevie Wonder came out and sang “Take Me With U.” It was a beautiful duet. Afterwards, Jennifer Hudson came out in a white jacket with a hood and belted out “Purple Rain.” It was amazing! Everyone gave her a standing ovation and the hosts called it “incredible.”
Next up was Maxwell, who sang “Nothing Compares 2 U.” And Janelle Monae came out soon thereafter to sing “Don’t Have To Be Rich” and “I Would Die 4 U.” It was so reminiscent of a Prince performance — she even showed off her butt cheeks in assless chaps.
And last but certainly not least, Sheila E., who was Prince’s ex and longtime collaborator, closed the tribute by singing “Erotic City” and shaking around on stage with an army of backup dancers.
As HollywoodLife.com previously reported, Prince tragically died from a drug overdose on April 21, 2016. He was also given a tribute at the Billboard Music Awards in May, but BET dissed Madonna and Stevie Wonder’s performance, saying they had something much better in store. So now we must ask — did they?
