She may have been a last minute addition to the BET Awards performers list…but Jennifer Hudson absolutely brought down the house at the show! She belted ‘Purple Rain’ during one of many tributes to Prince, and she completely blew us away. EPIC!
Jennifer Hudson, 34, never disappoints, and that was no different when she took the stage at the 2016 BET Awards on June 26. Just one of several performers at the show, the singer completely stole the show with her rendition of Prince’s “Purple Rain,” and we can’t get over how incredible it was.
There were Prince tributes sprinkled throughout the entire show, and following Stevie Wonder and Tori Kelly’s insane duet of “Take Me With U,” Jennifer got the crowd on their feet with an absolutely stunning, electric and powerful performance. She looked absolutely incredible in a short white dress with hood, and belted out every note to perfection. Obviously, Jennifer got emotional, practically breaking down in tears right there on stage, and the tribute ended with a photo of the late singer flashing on the screen behind her.
J.Hud was actually just confirmed as a performer earlier this week, and we’re so glad she was! In terms of her career, Jennifer has actually been laying pretty low lately — she recently ended her run as Shug Avery in Broadway’s The Color Purple — so it was refreshing to see her doing her thing again up on that stage.
The 34-year-old has a lot to look forward to in the months to come, though: In April, it was announced that she had joined the cast of Hairspray Live!, Fox’s next live musical. She’ll be playing Motormouth Maybelle in the production, and after the success of Grease, we cannot wait to see this go down. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until Dec. 7 to check it out!
