CM Punk is back. The ex-WWE star, who’s real name is Phil Brooks, will be fighting again — but this time, instead of a ring, he’s heading into an octagon. He confirmed when he’ll do his first fight on Thursday morning.
CM Punk, 37, is officially making a comeback. In December 2014, CM Punk signed a contract with the UFC, but we haven’t yet seen him fight! Luckily, he’s finally healthy enough to get in the octagon — but who will he go head-to-head with?
CM will officially be going head-to-head with Mickey Gall at UFC 203 on Sept. 10 in Cleveland. He confirmed the news on the new UFC Unfiltered podcast with Matt Serra and Jim Norton.
“I think there’s probably something seriously wrong with me,” CM said with a laugh. “Everyone is trying to figure out why I would want to do this. I’m a guy who gets bored easily and I have goals and there’s things in life I enjoy. It’s not about the destination; it’s about the journey.”
CM Punk was reportedly fired from the WWE in 2014 after an injury and signed with the UFC in December 2014. After training for nearly a year, he revealed in February 2016 he had a herniated disc and had to undergo surgery. Following the surgery he began training right away at Roufusport in Milwaukee.
As for his opponent, well he hand picked CM Punk. After debuting in the UFC in February, he beat out Mike Jackson in first round — and he had announced beforehand to UFC President Dana White that if he had won, he wanted CM Punk.
Well, we’ll see it all go down at UFC 203, which is headlined by a fight between Stipe Miocic and challenger Alistair Overeem.
