After Senate Democrats filibustered to force Republican senators to vote on gun control, the House Democrats are now staging a sit-in to force Republican representatives to do the same. Click through for the details about this remarkable political event.
This is one for the history books. Representative John Lewis (D-GA), a civil rights icon, called more than 40 fellow Democrats to the House of Representatives floor just before noon on Wednesday, June 22, and gave a stirring speech to House Republicans. The Democrats have staged a sit-in to force Republicans to vote on a gun control bill, and will not be leaving until their demands are met. Click through to watch their incredible call for action!
UPDATE: Democratic presidential candidate and Vermont senator Bernie Sanders has joined the sit-in!
“The time for silence and patience is long gone,” Rep. Lewis, said, addressing the House. “The American people are demanding action. Do we have the courage, do we have the raw courage to make at least a down payment on ending gun violence in America?” His full address can be seen in the above video.
Unfortunately, no cameras are allowed inside when the House is in recess, so there is no official live stream. However, ABC News is airing live footage taken by representatives on the floor — CLICK HERE to see it! If this live stream is taken down, representatives are also broadcasting on Periscope! It was business as usual during morning proceedings, but when Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX) called the House back in session shortly after noon, he was immediately cut off by the democrats. “No bill, no break,” they chanted. Reps. Joe Crowley (NY), Donna Edwards (MD) and John Larson (CN) sat down on the floor by the front podium and the names of those 49 people who were slaughtered at a gay club in Orlando, FL on June 12. It’s been deemed the worst mass shooting in United States history.
Rep. Poe, who was overseeing the House, attempted to proceed as normal, proceeding with the usual prayer and Pledge of Allegiance, but realized nothing else was going to get done that day; he called for another recess. This sit-in could stretch until Friday, June 24, and the dedicated Democrats have no plans of leaving their places on the floor.

“We have lost hundreds and thousands of innocent people to gun violence — tiny little children, babies, students and teachers, mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, daughters and sons, friends and neighbors — and what has this body done?” Rep. Lewis said, his fellow Democrats gathered around him. “Mr. Speaker nothing. Not one thing.”
