The body of the Orlando shooter, Omar Mateen, was released by the coroner’s office on June 20, authorities have confirmed. However, officials are refusing to release the shooter’s autopsy information and will not reveal who claimed his body.
Omar Mateen’s body was released from the Orange County Medical Examiner’s office on June 20, just over a week after he opened fire at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, murdering 49 people and injuring 53 others. Further information about the release of the corpse has not been revealed. All the victims of this brutal attack were autopsied within 72 hours of Omar’s rampage, and his was stored separately from the rest, according to the Medical Examiner. Omar’s autopsy has been completed, but results won’t be released to the family or public until the ongoing FBI investigation is complete.
The FBI also released transcripts from the 911 phone call Omar made to police amid his violent rampage at the nightclub, during which he declared himself an “Islamic soldier” and pledged allegiance to an unnamed terrorist organization.
Omar opened fire around 2:00 a.m. on June 12, and wasn’t shot dead by police until over three hours later. During that time, he took hostages in the club’s bathroom, texted his wife, and made multiple calls to 911. Eventually, police on the scene decided to explode a wall of the nightclub, realizing that future danger to the people inside was imminent anyway, and several lives were saved.
Meanwhile, Omar’s wife, Noor Zahi Salman, 30, is being investigated by the FBI following the attack. Noor allegedly drove Omar to Pulse so he could scope out the area before the shooting, and is being looked at as an accomplice to his crimes. Before his rampage at Pulse, Omar reportedly hinted at what was to come on Facebook, and an investigation into his past is still ongoing.
