After 15 seasons in the NBA, Richard Jefferson is going out on top! Just minutes after his Cleveland Cavaliers won the 2016 NBA Championship, the veteran player said he’s retiring — which had Cavs fans begging him to stay! Click to see.
Winning the 2016 NBA Finals for Cleveland meant the world to LeBron James, 31, but he wasn’t the only Cavaliers player overjoyed with this NBA championship victory. LeBron’s teammate, Richard Jefferson, 35, was so happy, he decided to call it a day and announce his retirement!
“I am retiring. I am retiring,” the veteran Forward told Fox Sports Ohio as he celebrated the Cavs win over the Golden State Warriors on June 19, per ESPN. “My teammates keep trying to talk me out of it, and I’m like ‘guys, this has been the most stressful month of my life.’ I was like, ‘I don’t know.'”
It sounds like Richard wants to end his 15-year-career on a high note. Yet after finally winning the NBA Championship, it might be hard for him to hang up his jersey. Richard was the No. 13 draft pick in the 2001 Draft, according to NBA.com, and he’s only been with the Cavs for the 2015-16 season. Prior to that, he played for the New Jersey Nets, the San Antonio Spurs, the Milwaukee Bucks, the Utah Jazz, and even the Golden State Warriors, the team he and the Cavs just beat!
Some Cleveland fans just weren’t ready to see Richard walk off into the sunset. Some pointed out how he was a “big key contributor” to the Cavaliers, while others were just left shaking their heads about the news. However, some were just glad that Richard (who turns 36 on June 21) will have the greatest birthday present ever: A NBA Championship Ring!

It’s possible that Richard’s announcement was just him being caught up in the moment. A lot of emotions were flying after the Cavs won Cleveland its first championship since 1964. J.R. Smith, 30, broke down in tears while paying tribute to his dad (on Father’s Day, no less!) LeBron was also weeping in joy after falling to his knees after the historic win. While Cavs fans rejoiced over the win, even LeBron and Draymond Green, 26, squashed their on-court beef with a huge hug!
Do you think Richard Jefferson will retire, HollywoodLifers? Or do you think he’ll be back for one more season? Should he go out on top now that he has a ring?
