In the wake of Anton Yelchin’s tragic death, we’ve learned that a gear issue in the actor’s Jeep may have led to his car accident. A lawyer tells HollywoodLife.com that Anton’s family could sue the car manufacturer and walk away with millions of dollars.
Anton Yelchin was the victim of a fatal car accident on June 19, and as his friends and family reel from his death, Los Angeles lawyer Mychal Wilson tells HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY that they may sue the car company for wrongful death, if they choose. Get all of the details right here.
Anton’s car was involved in a 2015 recall for gear shift problems, and since the vehicle was never fixed, it’s likely that the issue led to his death. As a result, Mychal explains to HollywoodLife.com that Anton’s family has a legal right to sue for damages. “Under product liability, consumers who have been injured as a result of car-related defect may have a legal claim to damages,” Mychal says. “Here, the family may sue the car manufacturer, parts manufacturer and/or dealership for wrongful death caused by the gear shifter problem in the recalled Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo.” It’s certainly something to think about. “Damages will be in the millions — and the family will most likely be awarded millions of dollars in the lawsuit,” Mychal says.
Mychal adds that under the California Code of Civil Procedure, his family has two years to file a wrongful death lawsuit. “Damages that may be awarded to Anton Yelchin’s survivors include ‘Economic Damages’ such as as financial support, gifts and benefits that the survivors may have received from Anton Yelchin’s normal life expectancy,” he says. “The survivors may also recover ‘Non-economic Damages’ which is know as the Loss of Consortium, i.e. the loss of love and moral support.” Our hearts go out to Anton’s friends and family during this difficult time.
