Heartbreaking details about Anton Yelchin’s tragic car accident have come to light. A report says that the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee that he was killed in was part of a recall announced last year due to issues with the ‘e-shift’ transmission — get all of the info right here.
Anton Yelchin was the victim of a fatal car accident on June 19, and we’ve learned that the car he was driving was actually under recall. Read on to see why Anton’s car was being investigated, along with 850,000 other vehicles, by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration — and how the issues with the car may have contributed to his accident.
The car that Anton died in was part of a government investigation, CBS News reports. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration had about 850,000 vehicles under inspection, most of which were 2014 and 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokees that featured “e-shift” transmissions — which lack the usual “grooves and sensation” of moving a car into park, drive or reverse. The investigation found that the the transmissions are “not intuitive”, and that they provide “poor tactile and visual feedback to the driver, increasing the potential for unintended gear selection.”
However, investigators have not yet found a connection between the transmission in Anton’s car and the accident that claimed his life. “Yelchin’s death was an accident caused by blunt traumatic asphyxia,” Lt. Larry Dietz told CBS News. “It was just one of those freak accidents.”
As we previously knew, Anton’s friends were worried when he didn’t show up to a rehearsal, according or reports. Per TMZ, his friends arrived at Anton’s San Fernando Valley home at around 1:00 AM, and found him pinned between his car and a brick mailbox at his home. The vehicle was reportedly still running and in neutral. Just awful.
