The powerful season three finale of ‘Penny Dreadful’ not only included a shocking death that changes everything, it actually ended in a way that really raised eyebrows.
Spoilers ahead, of course. There’s no turning back from here!
“My battle must end, or there will never be peace on earth.” Those were the words that Eva Green‘s Vanessa muttered to Josh Hartnett‘s Ethan in part two of the finale. With that, she gave him a pistol and kissed him. They recited the Lord’s prayer together and with that, he shot her. While she lay in his arms, her last words were. “Oh, Ethan. I see our Lord.”
And no, that’s the what we’re questioning. What is the question is “the end.” When the screen went dark and the two-part finale came to an end, with the Creature at Vanessa’s grave, the words “The End” scrolled along the screen.
That posed the question — what about season four? There has been no announcement about the ending of the show, nor has there been renewal news, but with the high praise the show gets from critics, it would be a shocking move to end it after just three seasons.
Update: Showtime announced on June 20 that the show is not returning for another season.
This was the first show for showrunner, John Logan, and he revealed in 2014 that at that point, he didn’t think past season three. “Because this is my first TV show and I didn’t know if I’d be able to do it, I spent years thinking about it and charting out the cosmology, all the various forces of play around those characters,” he told Deadline. “I charted it up to the third season in terms of where I wanted to take the story, where I wanted to align to some of the classic novels that inspired it and some of the ways I wanted to variant those things.”
The question is also posed: can it and should it continue without the amazing Eva Green? Will it give viewers a chance to see other stories? Or will it lag without the powerful dynamic that
is was Vanessa?
HollywoodLifers, what do you make of “The End” of Penny Dreadful? Do you think the show will continue without Eva? Should it? Let us know.
