Nick Cannon claims there’s no drama between him and ex, Mariah Carey, but then blasted her in his latest single, ‘Divorce Papers.’ And after hearing this diss record, it sounds like a lot of things are still unresolved!
This is starting to get confusing. Is Nick Cannon, 35, on good terms with his ex-wife Mariah Carey, 46, or not? Well, the answer to that question may have been revealed after, the Nickelodeon mogul released an interesting song called, “Divorce Papers,” about his previous relationship with the diva. Listen to the song here!
Nick Cannon has always had a knack for spoken word and speaking about whatever is on his mind, and this songs seems be his way of doing that in regard to clearing the air on his previous relationship.
“Damn, Em,” he raps toward the beginning of the track in reference to rapper, Eminem, 43. “Right now I could really relate to him/ Drug habits, all the pain that he was in/ Saying foul shit when you don’t know where your baby mama been.” Whoa, it sounds like Nick is comparing his situation to Eminem’s also public relationship with Kim Mathers, 41! This could even be a reference to when Nick allegedly refused to sign his divorce papers at first.
In addition to mentioning possible marital spats, he also shared a heartbreaking story about his kids following his divorce in 2015. “We single now but we really need to think about is how a child deals/ how a child feels/ because we got two and they brilliant for real/ resilient for real,” he raps. “My daughter said daddy why your eyes in tears/ because last time I dropped your brother off I didn’t get a call the next day and it felt like years/ and Ima be honest/ sometimes I hate to hear you’re on the other line having fun without me/…I wonder if my son will ever doubt me / What’s love I don’t care about it I just want my kids to be safe.” Poor Nick!
While much of the song sounds like an open letter about Mariah and their time together, the former child star claimed the song has a different purpose. “My purpose for creating this ‘Divorce Papers’ freestyle was not to feed the tabloid chatter, or even to diffuse it. This was strictly a creative way for me to express my frustrations with the media, the naysayers, myself and ultimately with the voices in my head,” he told Karen Civil. And he was a little apprehensive to release the record at first, but ultimately felt like it was for the best. “I’ve been sitting on the song for almost a week now because I was really torn on whether or not I should release it,” he continued. “The last thing I would ever want to do is add fuel to the fire, especially a fire that was fabricated by the press. But, ultimately I felt it was necessary to clear the air and set the record straight once and for all.”
This sounds all too familiar, as the Drumline actor has tried to assure the media and fans that he and the singer have a great relationship despite the split. “My ex and I are in a great place and are diligently moving things along so we both can continue to be happy. I am happy for her and all her new endeavors, both personal ones and professional ones. I sincerely hope the media doesn’t once again try to manipulate my words or my purpose for releasing this song. As the world knows, I am an open book and I’m proud of that,” he said after reports leaked suggesting he was upset by Mariah’s new engagement.
Nick may really be happy for Mariah and even have a great relationship with her. But it probably becomes very difficult for fans to believe, seeing how he constantly mentions her in songs and spoken word pieces. He could be an open book, but Nick may want to flip to another chapter if he wants people to stop talking about the subject.
HollywoodLifers, do you think Nick and Mariah have a great friendship, or is this song proof that something is not right?
