Chris Murphy has had enough! The Connecticut Senator launched a filibuster to force Congress to work on gun control reform after the Orlando massacre. As he fights to save American lives, here are 5 things about Chris Murphy.
The heartbreaking bloodbath at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, which left 49 innocent people dead, was too much for Chris Murphy, 42. The Senator was frustrated with Congress refusing to do anything about the never-ending gun violence, so he launched a major filibuster! Chris is about to force Republicans and Democrats to finally pass some gun control reform, so get to know more about him!
1. He’s the junior U.S. senator from Connecticut.
Chris defeated Linda McMahon, 67, to win a seat in the U.S. Senate in 2012, after serving six years in the House of Representatives. He possibly had the biggest political moment of his career. On June 15, he led a Democratic filibuster of the Senate, vowing to talk “as long as I can” and block any other legislation until Congress makes some kind of gun control reform. It worked! After 15-hours, Dems and Republicans agreed to allow votes on two proposed gun control measures, according to NBC News.
2. He’s been fighting for gun control for years.
Chris’s first speech as a senator was about gun control, and he delivered it in April 2013, just months after Adam Lanza slaughtered 20 children and six adult workers at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut. “[This issue] is the first one in which I’ve felt an emotional imperative to deliver,” he told The New York Times. “These parents are my contemporaries. I’ve got two little boys at home just younger than the ones that were killed.”
3. He’s also fighting for mental health reform.
If Chris’s efforts pay off, Congress will also pass the Mental Health Reform Act of 2016, according to WSHU. Chris has been fighting to pass the bill, as it would give more coverage to mental health patients and fund efforts to teach teachers how to detect potential mental disorders.
4. He could be the next Vice President of the United States.
Chris endorsed Hillary Clinton, 68, proudly tweeting “for the first time ever, a major party will nominate a woman for POTUS. Congratulations, @HillaryClinton #ImWithHer.” Chris is one of the names, suggested by USA Today, to be on Hill’s list for running mates. However, Chris’s office hasn’t commented on his chances of being the next vice-president.
15 hrs on the floor. 2 hrs of sleep. And I'm back on my (tired) feet, ready to keep pressing Congress to end its silence on gun violence.

5. His other main passion? Baseball.
Being from New England, Chris is a passionate fan of the Boston Red Sox. He tweets about the team frequently. He’s also a fan of the New York Giants football team, and per New York Times, a big Diet Mountain Dew drinker. Clearly, doing the Dew gave him the strength to finally force Congress to address America’s mass shooting problem.
