While the world is still reeling from the events of the Pulse nightclub shooting on June 12, one survivor of the horrific night shared a shocking cell phone video that he took while hiding in a bathroom stall. Click here to see the terrifying video.
When Omar Mateen, 29, began shooting inside Pulse nightclub in the early morning on June 12, Miguel Leiva, 29, and several other clubgoers locked themselves inside a bathroom, waiting to be rescued by the police. Luckily, Miguel survived the attack and even managed to record footage while inside the bathroom. Click here to see video of the hostages during the three-hour long shooting.
Miguel, a cancer survivor from Miami, happened to be visiting his girlfriend in Orlando over the weekend, when his friend invited him to go to Pulse. In the short clip that Miguel was able to take, hostages are seen huddled together on the bathroom floor, passing a cup of water around, hoping to survive the massacre. Some victims talk to each other, but someone shushes them to be quiet. Later in the clip, a woman is heard sobbing. Many people inside the locked bathroom were suffering from gunshot wounds, and some ended up dying before they could be saved. The footage is heartbreaking to watch and we can’t even imagine how these people must have felt while waiting for help to arrive.
“We just stood quiet, and everyone’s phone kept ringing,” Miguel, who suffered two gunshot wounds, said in an interview with WPLG on June 15. “The only way we knew to let our families know we’re OK was just to record it and let them hear we’re trying to be quiet and send the video.” Miguel and the others were saved by the police who punched holes in the walls of Pulse to rescue the hostages. “We were just waving our hands so they could see we were alive, but we were still trying to be quiet. They start pulling people out,” Miguel said.
Miguel is now recovering in the hospital, but not everyone who was in the bathroom with him made it out okay. “Half of those people were in the bathroom with me,” Miguel said of the 49 named dead in the massacre. We’re so glad Miguel and his fellow survivors made it out okay!
