Just days after the worst mass shooting in American history, a 16-year-old girl has been shot to death on a street in Oakland, CA. Get the full story here.
This is beyond awful. Reggina Jefferies, 16, has been killed, and three others were hurt in a downtown Oakland shooting on June 16. Gunfire sent people running for cover according to police reports, and it took place near a vigil for two drowning victims.
According to police, the shooting took place in broad daylight, as multiple gunshots rang out at 13th and Franklin streets. Witnesses say they saw two gunmen on foot, and windows of nearby businesses were blown out from the shots. Fortunately, the surviving victims are in stable condition according to police reports, but Reggina Jefferies, who was only sixteen years old, was reportedly shot in the neck and later died at Highland Hospital in Oakland.
Reggina was one of 3,000 people who were attending a vigil for Josiah Pratt Rose and Jamari Wilson, 15-year-old friends who drowned when they fell out of a boat in May, according to reports.
Lt. Carlos Gonzalez and others spoke to The San Francisco Chronicle, recounting the awful incident. “There were people running every which way,” one witness told the paper. “The really scary thing, coming on the heels of the shooting in Orlando, you wonder is it gang-related or is it a crazy gunman. I guess you figure sooner or later if you live in a city like that you…realize anything can happen at any time.” It’s unbelievably sad that Reggina didn’t survive her injuries, and our hearts go out to her and her family.
