The best athletes in the world will compete for some amazingly looking medals during the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Olympics have unveiled the gold, silver and bronze medal designs so click to see!
Just winning an Olympic medal is a huge honor in itself. Yet, if an athlete takes home the gold, silver or bronze during the 2016 Rio Olympics, they’ll have the added bonus of winning an award that’s almost as amazing as their talent! The new medal designs have been unveiled and they are fabulous!
“Today marks the start of the final countdown to the first Olympic Games to be stages in South America,” Tomas Bach, International Olympic Committee President, said during the unveiling event on June 14, according the Washington Post. The medals feature the Olympic logo with the words “Rio 2016” surrounded by the games’ trademark laurel leaves.
The opposite side of the medal includes an image of Nike, the ancient Greek goddess of Victory (so that’s where the shoe’s name comes from!) She’s posing in front of the Panathinaiko Stadium with the Acropolis in the background. The Greek imagery celebrates “the relationship between the strengths of the Olympic heroes and the forces of nature,” according to the BBC.
Despite being gold, silver and bronze, these prestigious medals are also incredibly green! The gold medals are completely mercury-free, and both the bronze and silver medals are made from 30% recycled materials. Even the medals’ ribbons are environmentally friendly, as half of the plastic is from recycled plastic bottles. Along with allowing transgender athletes to complete without having to undergo surgery, this may be the most progressive Olympics ever!
There have been 2,488 total medals produced, according to the Rio 2016 Website. There will be 812 gold, 812 silver and 864 bronze medals. That also includes the Paralympics medals, which has the words “Rio 2016 Paralympic Games” written on them in Braille. How cool! We’ll have to see who takes home one of the highest honors in all of sports when the 2016 Olympics take place from Aug. 5 to Aug. 21. The Paralympics will follow a month later, from Sep. 7 to Sep. 18.
