Another interview, another opportunity for Zayn Malik to totally diss One Direction! In a new Q&A, the singer discusses his transformation into a solo artist, and admits he feels like he’s treated VERY different professionally (in a good way) compared to when he was in the band. Ouch!
Zayn Malik, 23, is in a much better place these days than he was when he was in One Direction. The 23-year-old hasn’t been shy about admitting he never felt like himself in the boy band, but in a new interview, he opens up even more about life as a solo artist on his new record label. “They seemed to treat me as though I was an artist for the first time, which felt really cool,” Zayn tells Dazed of his new record label, RCA. “And they respected the music. I had written a lot of it before I went with RCA and they liked where I was going and wanted to give me freedom, so I was like, ‘Cool.'”
Zayn famously left One Direction in March 2015, and exactly a year later, he dropped his first solo project, Mind Of Mine. “I didn’t know what to expect,” he recalls. “I wanted to make that statement, that this was something completely separate from whatever was out there before. I kind of expected the fans that followed me before to be a bit freaked out by it. It was nerve-racking for me but it worked out for the best, because people started listening to it in a more mature context.” Stream Zayn’s music completely unlimited and ad-free HERE.
Still, that doesn’t mean the “Pillowtalk” singer isn’t still facing some struggles now that he’s gone solo. In fact, he even had a to cancel a show in the UK on June 11 because of how bad his anxiety was! “With the magnitude of the event I have suffered the worst anxiety of my career,” he explained to fans. “I cannot apologise enough but I want to be honest with everyone who has patiently waited to see me, I promise I will do my best to make this up to everybody I’ve let down today”
Luckily, Zayn had the support of his beautiful girlfriend, Gigi Hadid, 20, after the cancellation. As we EXCLUSIVELY reported, though, the supermodel has been begging her man to get back with 1D to help his mental health, but based on these latest comments, it definitely doesn’t seem like that will happen any time soon!
