The AR-15 appears to be the weapon of choice in many American mass shootings: the shooting at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut; at a screening of The Dark Knight in Aurora, Colorado; at a county health clinic in San Bernardino, California; at the campus of Umpqua Community College in Oregon. The federal government doesn’t keep track of how many people own AR-15s, but it’s estimated by experts, according to the New York Times, that there are several million in circulation.
