1. He’s divorced after meeting his first wife online
Omar met Sitora Yusufiy online in 2009, and they didn’t wait long before tying the knot. According to Sitora, Omar “seemed like a normal human being” when they first met, but when she saw his true, aggressive nature, she filed for divorce quickly.
2. His ex-wife accused him of beating her
“After a few months he started to beat me,” Sitora admitted. “He was mentally unstable. He was obviously disturbed. I know he had a history of [taking] steroids. She added that Omar was “short tempered” and often expressed “hate toward things.”
3. He was reportedly homophobic
Omar’s dad gave the public a deeper look into the reason the 29-year-old decided to attack a gay nightclub, revealing that months earlier, his son became angry when he saw two men kissing.”They were kissing each other and touching each other and he said, ‘Look at that. In front of my son they’re doing that,'” Mir Seddique explained. He added that the incident had “nothing to do with religion,” and that the family was not aware Omar was planning on taking any action.
4. He’s been on the FBI’s radar since 2013
Omar was first investigated by the FBI after he made “inflammatory comments to coworkers” in 2013, but because officials could not connect him to any specific terrorist threats, they closed the investigation. He was looked into again in 2014 when he was determined to have ties to a suicide bomber, but this case was also closed when it was found that he had “minimal contact” with the individual. He was not on a terrorist watch list.
5. He pledged allegiance to ISIS
In the midst of his attack, Omar called 911 and pledged his loyalty to the radical group. This public oath is pretty much the only requirement the Islamic State has for those who want to carry out acts of terror in its name.
