Omar Mateen’s father is denying that his son’s reprehensible shooting rampage at Pulse nightclub had anything to do with religion, but says it could instead be rooted in homophobia.
Omar Mateen, 29, reportedly became furious after he recently saw two men kissing, according to his father, Mir Seddique. Mir believes that the troubling incident is connected to Omar’s horrific act of murdering 50 people and injuring 53 more at the Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando on June 12. Omar’s father told NBC News that his son became angry when he saw PDA between two men several months before this gruesome incident. This incident is what Mir thinks led to Omar shooting up the gay hot spot, murdering 50 and injuring 53 more after holding the 320 patrons hostage. He denied it was about radical Islamic terrorism, as law enforcement officials are suspecting.
“We were in Downtown Miami, Bayside, people were playing music. And he saw two men kissing each other in front of his wife and kid and he got very angry,” Mir told NBC News. “They were kissing each other and touching each other and he said, ‘Look at that. In front of my son they are doing that.’ And then we were in the men’s bathroom and men were kissing each other.”
“This has nothing to do with religion,” Mir said. “[Our family is] saying we are apologizing for the whole incident. We weren’t aware of any action [Omar] is taking. We are in shock like the whole country.”
The incident is being investigated as an act of terrorism; FBI and Florida police are attempting to determine if it was domestic or international, and if Omar had ties to larger organizations. Florida state representative Alan Grayson has stated that the shooting could very well be considered a hate crime against the gay community.
The attack was “more likely than not ideologically motivated,” Rep. Grayson told NBC News. “It’s no coincidence that the attack took place where it did and when it did. It might be that we’ve seen the commission of an awful hate crime.”
Rep. Grayson revealed that investigators were in the process of combing the crime scene and searching Omar’s home. He said that processing the scene at pulse could “take hours,” as “there is blood everywhere.” This crime was such a shocking and disgusting act.
