Obama kicks off the thank-you note writing session with a command to Jimmy’s house band, The Roots, to accompany him with dramatic piano music. “Thank you, my 2008 slogan, ‘Yes We Can!’, or as I now like to call you, ‘Yes We Did’,” Obama says. Amazing. Jimmy then tries to one-up him: “Thank you, President Obama’s birth certificate. He used to carry you around to prove he was American; now he needs to carry you around to prove he’s only 54.” Ooh, burn! “Thank you, Questlove‘s hairstylist, for inspiring me to bring back the Obama-fro after I leave the White House,” Obama jokes, as they cut to a photo of a young Obama, who is indeed rocking a ‘fro.
Then it gets interesting: “Thank you, Hillary Clinton, for possibly become the first fff…president — I would have said ‘female’ but someone deleted the email,” Jimmy grins. LOL! “We’re gonna get in trouble for this! I’m appalled!” he says, pretending he had no part in writing the note. “I’m not sure this was a good idea,” Obama adds. So good.
Finally, Obama delivers the best barb of the night: “Thank you, Congress, for spending eight years wishing you could replace me with a Republican…or to put it another way, how do you like me now?” he asks, as a picture of Trump flashes across the screen. Cue the thunderous applause and cheering as Jimmy and Obama share a handshake and a hug in a display of total #friendshipgoals.
