.) Mickey may forego college at UCLA, given this undeniably amazing opportunity. “Jeez, it’s indescribable,” he said on the MLB Network broadcast of the event in New Jersey. “To be the No. 1 pick, it’s insane. I couldn’t be more excited right now.” Although he originally agreed to attend the highly sought after university as a high school freshman, the Bruins may have little chance of actually keeping the left-handed hitter committed now that he’s wanted by the pros.
.) He’s building a legacy. This draft marks the second time in franchise history that the Phillies had the number one overall pick. The only time this has happened before was with another college player, who played two years in the minor leagues, Miami outfielder Pat Burrell aka “Pat the Bat” in 1998. Furthermore, Mickey is the eighth outfielder chosen right out of high school as the first pick in the history of the draft.
.) The dude is a team-player. Mickey is part of the reason the under 18-years-old Team USA captured the gold medal at the 2015 Baseball World Cup in Nishinomiya, Japan. His spirit can also be noted when he was later quoted saying, “I just want to help my team win. If I have a bad at-bat. I still have to go to center field and make a good play. It definitely puts things in perspective.”
.) Mickey’s signature may be inked on another person’s body pretty soon. On the MLB broadcast, he addressed a previous childhood bet. A friend told him that he would get a tattoo of the outfielder’s signature if Mickey became a top-10 pick. Mickey let the world know he plans to hold his friend to his word. The potential Phillies player also has two of his own tattoos reading “FOE,” meaning Family Over Everything, as well as the word “Chase” on his forearm.
.) It’s all in the family. His grandfather, Bill Moniak, was previously in the Boston Red Sox organization. He nearly reached stardom by playing baseball for the minor leagues for six seasons! He never reached the majors but now that one of his 16 grandchildren has become the number one pick, can you imagine how proud he would be?!
