Wow. Tennis player Maria Sharapova has been banned from the court for two years after testing positive for meldonium at the Australian Open. So shocking.
Maria Sharapova, 29, will not be participating in any professional tennis games any time soon, sadly. The International Tennis Foundation has revealed that they are banning her from playing the game for two years, all due to her shocking confessional of testing positive for meldonium in March 2016.
Unfortunately for Maria Sharapova, her use of meldonium has caused her two years of tennis games. On Wednesday, June 8, it was announced that Maria’s punishment for confessing to testing positive for the enhancement drug would be two years out of the court, reports the New York Post.
Maria first revealed that she had tested positive for the drug in March 2016, shortly after competing in the Australian Open. Meldonium, a non-FDA approved drug, is reported to be beneficial to the human heart. The drug also helps your body better use it’s energy, which is why it’s frowned upon and treated like steroid use when athletes take it. At the time of her confession, Maria claimed that she had been taking meldonium for years to treat multiple different health conditions.
Even though the ITF concluded that Maria had not been using meldonium for enhancement purposes, nor had she been intentionally seeking the drug as an athlete, they still decided to ban her. Unfortunately for them, Maria is extremely upset with the decision and has revealed that she will be appealing the ITF’s decision.
“While the tribunal concluded correctly that I did not intentionally violate the anti-doping rules, I cannot accept an unfairly harsh two-year suspension. The tribunal, whose members were selected by the ITF, agreed that I did not do anything intentionally wrong, yet they seek to keep me from playing tennis for two years. I will immediately appeal the suspension portion of this ruling to CAS, the Court of Arbitration for Sport,” Maria wrote in a lengthy response on her official Facebook page.
