The CMT Awards may be a country music awards show…but there was certainly no discrimination when it came to genre at the event in 2016. With performances from Fifth Harmony, Pitbull & more, fans are angrily wondering where the heck all the country music has gone!
If the CMT Awards are supposed to celebrate the best of country music, then what the heck are Fifth Harmony, Pitbull, Elle King and more doing performing at the show? That’s what fans are wondering during the 2016 event…and the consensus is that they’re pretty livid about it!

Although the show kicked off with a country performance from Keith Urban, Brett Eldredge and Maren Morris, some of the following sets came from artists outside the genre. Pitbull and Leona Lewis performed with Cassadee Pope, who used to be a pop-punk artist, Billy Ray Cyrus took the stage with rock group Cheap Trick and Cam was joined by Fifth Harmony for a rendition of both their hits.
Obviously, show planners made sure to pair the non-country artists up with singers from the genre, but that didn’t stop fans from pointing out that the country music vibe was totally lost. Twitter immediately flooded with angry messages over the situation — and it got pretty harsh.
One user even pointed out that the hosts, JJ Watt and Erin Andrews, also have nothing to do with country music. True, but this show has had hosts, like Kristen Bell, in the past who are simply fans of country…and there’s nothing wrong with that!
CMT has always tried to be inclusive of other types of music — in fact, their series CMT Crossroads, in which a country artist teams up with a pop/rap/R&B etc. singer/group for a collaboration set, has been airing successfully for years!
Adding artists like Pitbull is simply a way for the network to attract viewers who may not normally watch the CMT Awards, so it makes perfect sense. Still, fans are pissed — read their tweets here:

Cheap Trick and Billy Ray Cyrus? Why? No one cares about Billy Ray, and Cheap Trick is rock band. #CMTawards – 10 minutes, no country
