Rock meets country! Iconic music group Cheap Trick joined country legend Billy Ray Cyrus on the outdoor stage to open the 2016 CMT Awards, and we completely loved it! Their performance was a perfect way to kick off the show.
Billy Ray Cyrus, 54, made a triumphant return to the CMT Awards show stage when he joined Cheap Trick to create a memorable super group performance. Billy opened with the late Elvis Presley‘s “Don’t Be Cruel,” then Cheap Trick jumped in with their hit “Surrender.” Billy then joined in on the singing as the Cheap Trick guys tossed souvenirs into the crowd. Their collaboration was fresh, fun and totally unexpected. Bravo, guys!
Billy Ray is one heck of a country star and has been in the game a long time. Cheap Trick are equally impressive in the rock ‘n’ roll genre and have a long list of hits too! So, whoever thought to put these two together on the CMT Award show stage is a pure genius cause the results were amazing.
“The Achy Breaky Heart” singer, has been absent from the awards since 2008 when he cohosted the show with his daughter Miley Cyrus, 23. This appearance marks Cheap Trick’s debut on the CMT’s. The rockers have never before performed live for such a large country award show audience. We love it when two of our favorite music genres get together.
Cheap Trick, the rock & roll hall of famers, released their first new album in 7 years, Bang, Zoom, Crazy… Hello, in early 2016. The group first got together in 1973 and have many hits over the years including “I Want You To Want Me,” and the hit they sang with Billy, “Surrender.”

The last time Billy Ray mashed-up his music with another genre the results were equally amazing. Who could forget when Billy re-mixed his big hit “Achy Breaky Heart” and created a hip hop, rapping, twerk video back in 2014? Amazing! Billy clearly is a genius and can do no wrong in our minds.
What do you think HollywoodLifers? How amazing was Billy Ray Cyrus and Cheap Trick together at the CMT’s? Who was your favorite performance of the night?
