The 42-year-old was hospitalized on June 6, with his prognosis appearing grim, and just hours later, it was revealed that he’d died. Kimbo’s training partner claims the cause of death was heart failure, although that has not officially been confirmed.
“We are all shocked and saddened by the devastating untimely loss of Kimbo Slice, a beloved member of the Bellator family,” the CEO of the MMA said in a statement. “One of the most popular MMA fighters ever, Kimbo was a charismatic, larger-than-life personality that transcended the sport. Outside of the cage he was a friendly, gentle giant and a devoted family man. His loss leaves us all with extremely heavy hearts, and our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Ferguson family and all of Kimbo’s friends, fans and teammates.”
Kimbo leaves behind six kids, along with his longtime girlfriend, Antoinette Ray, and we cannot even imagine what they are going through. At the time of his death, Kimbo was in the midst of a comeback — he signed with Bellator MMA in Jan. 2015, five years after his last professional fight, and fought his last match in Feb. 2016. He won, but the decision was reversed when he tested positive for a banned steroid.
While the CEO’s statement gives a general look at how the MMA community is feeling, individuals flooded Twitter with their own messages of love and mourning, too. See their tweets below:
