The leading lady is finally revealed! NBC’s next live musical, ‘Hairspray,’ has announced many of the supporting stars, but on June 7, we found out the lead.
The movie turned Broadway show turned movie (starring John Travolta, Zac Efron and Amanda Bynes) is back again! Sure, we made our predictions and hopes for who would play the cast in Hairspray Live, but now it’s been revealed! Meet Maddie Baillio!
The cast was revealed on the Today show on June 7! Maddie Baillio, 20, a singer and dancer from League City, Texas, was selected to play the lead role after she auditioned at an open casting call for the huge part. In the 2007 movie, the lead role was played by Nikki Blonsky.
She joins the star-studded cast that’s previously been announced: Harvey Fierstein as Tracy’s mom, Edna; Marin Short as Edna’s husband, Wilbur; Derek Hough as s TV host Corny Collins; Jennifer Hudson as Motormouth Maybelle.

Hairspray will be produced by the same team behind The Sound of Music Live, Peter Pan Live and The Wiz Live, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron; Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman will compose. Grease: Live‘s Alex Rudzinski will direct!
