This will be an epic rematch from the 2015 World Cup, where Carly Lloyd scored a hat trick in the first sixteen minutes of the game. While the USWNT crushed the competition with a 5-2 victory, both squads have undergone changes since then. Carli’s out with a MCL sprain, per SB Nation, while Japan’s legendary midfielder, Homare Sawa, 37, has retired. Get your official Team Japan jersey here.
Japan has something to prove, because for the first time since 2000, the team failed to quality for the Summer Olympics. The team even dropped out of the top five of the FIFA rankings. While they’re still in the Top 10, the team is ready to burst out of this rut and get back on the winning track.
Team USA will have to be ready. Megan Rapinoe, 30, is healing from a torn ACL, and Christie Rampone, 40, is healing from knee surgery. Plenty of veterans have hung up their cleats, including Shannon Boxx, 38, Lori Chalupny, 32, Lauren Holiday, 28, and US soccer icon, Abby Wambach, 36. Even without those veterans, this USA/Japan clash is going to be wild!
