Sadly, tests have confirmed that Prince did, in fact, die of an opioid overdose, reports the Associated Press. Unfortunately the law enforcement official asked to remain anonymous, as he is very close to the investigation and was not authorized to release the information just yet.
However, the Medical Examiner’s office has confirmed the overdose by releasing Prince’s autopsy results. The result listed on the results is “Fentanyl toxicity,” which was also confirmed to be an “accident.” For those of you unfamiliar with the term, Fentanyl is a “potent, synthetic opioid analgesic with rapid onset and short duration of action,” according to it’s Wikipedia page.
On the early morning of April 21, the police department in Chanhassen, Minn., reported a fatality at Prince’s Paisley Park estate and studio. It was initially unclear who the deceased person was, but authorities quickly revealed that it was in fact Prince (whose full name is Prince Rogers Nelson) who had passed away.
Just six days before his tragic death, Prince’s plane had to make an emergency landing in Moline, Ill., so he could be rushed to the hospital. Although his rep later revealed that it was just a bad case of the flu that the singer had been battling for weeks — and he even reassured fans he was feeling okay on Twitter — obviously there was more to the story.
Fans, celebs, and musicians alike immediately took to Twitter to express their sadness over the loss of such a legendary singer. Prince was still very active in the music world, recording four albums in the last 18 months and touring right up until he passed away. He may be gone, but he’s certainly not forgotten!
