Surfer Blood guitarist Thomas Fekete died on May 30 at the tender age of 27, after losing a brutal battle with cancer. His wife confirmed the terrible news via statement.
Thomas Fekete, 27, passed away on May 30, 2016, after suffering from a rare and aggressive form of cancer (a sarcoma) for over a year. Thomas’ wife, Jessica Fekete, announced the horrifying news on the GoFundMe page set up to help pay his medical costs.
“Our sweet Thomas passed on last night, peacefully in his sleep, holding my hand,” Jessica wrote. “With one last sigh, he let go of the burden of pain and suffering that he has been bravely carrying for so long. I am full of comfort knowing that he is now free, and long for the day I get to be with him again…Now, my beautiful angel, go find Bowie and jam.”
Thomas was a founding member of the Florida rock band Surfer Blood, which formed in 2009, when he was just 20. He was forced to leave the band in 2015 to focus on his health, but they never stopped supporting their friend. On his GoFundMe page, Jessica wrote that’s medical treatments, including chemotherapy, medicines and surgeries, were costing $15,000 out of pocket per month.
So the band did something incredible and added to the donations by auctioning off previously unreleased songs Guided by Voices, Yo La Tengo, Cults, Real Estate, and The Drums! Thomas released an 11-track solo album called Burner in December 2015, while he was healing from surgery and waiting to start his courses of chemo. All sales of the album went toward his medical care.
Jessica said that she’ll be holding a memorial for Thomas later this summer. “I plan to host a celebration of his life here on the beach in South Florida, the first weekend of July, just after his birthday on 1st. I will share specific details as soon as possible. I invite anyone who holds Thomas in their hearts to please join me in celebrating him.”
