Get ready for some awesome talent, America! The 11th season of America’s Got Talent kicked off on May 31, bringing back beloved judges Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, and Mel B. The show opened with a 6-year-old named Nathan, who is possibly the cutest little boy in the world. Simon started off his new gig in a sweet way, joking around with Nathan. But it was apparently Nathan who wanted to joke around, because he declared that he was doing comedy. “Yep, I’m a comedian!” he told the panel. Okay, so he’s probably not going to win the season, but he has to get a pass for how adorable he is right?!
That’s apparently what the judges thought too, because Nathan was the first contestant up and the first contestant through!
Next up was Jose and his dog Carrie, which pretty much continued the cuteness that Nathan started. Not only did the dog dance with his owner, she wore a dress! It’s not the most natural thing for a dog to do, but it was pretty hilarious to watch a dog do a choreographed dance. And three of the judges agreed, which meant Jose and Carrie were through! Who would’ve thought that Simon would’ve said yes to a dancing dog, but he totally did! Maybe something’s in the water at AGT…
The third contestant(s) are a solid reminder of how diverse the acts are on this show. Emilie and Tommy, who go by The Clairvoyants, left everyone stunned with Emilie’s ability to identify objects that her partner would find amongst the crowd. Howie even declared that it was the most amazing thing he’s ever seen on the show! Obviously that meant they were through — and with a unanimous vote too!
Linkin’ Bridge was possibly the biggest surprise of the night, as they said they were inspired by Run DMC, Tupac, and N.W.A — except they were an a cappella group! Oh, and they were AMAZING. With Simon now on the panel, the stakes are high for singers, but these guys had no problem getting his approval!
So through four acts, we saw a total of one “no” from the judges. Needless to say, this premiere told us that Season 11 is likely going to be the most talented season of AGT yet!
Okay I have to say, as amazing as the first acts were, my favorite performance may have come with the next batch of boys….because they were The Spice Girlz! But unfortunately, their outfits were better than their performance. They hardly even tried! And suddenly we have our first rejected act.
A group of three acrobatics followed up the Spice Girlz, and they had all the judges on board — but not without Simon giving some of his classic Simon ‘tude to his fellow judges! This was followed up by a montage of the judges goofing off with each other, and I’m totally loving the chemistry they all have.
Umm, what just happened in this next act?! A Japanese guy put on one heck of a mind-blowing magic show. He had all the judges raving over the performance, so we will for sure be seeing more of this guy — especially because he put Simon in a fantastic mood!
Oh man, what this show can bring out. The next act was a middle-aged married couple named Charles and Rose, who were awfully frisky. Rose danced around in a fringe dress while her hubby sang Elvis, which was not the most impressive. But their charm won three of the four judges over, even making Simon vote with his heart and not his head to send them through! Definitely didn’t see that coming!
As if we haven’t seen some strange things already, we now see Tape Face come to the stage. He gives the judges no introduction, as he has a strip of tape across his mouth and won’t take it off. So what’s his routine if he won’t talk? It starts with some singing oven mittens, and the second part…I’m not really sure how to describe what he did. But Simon called it “simple, clever, unique, funny, and brilliant,” and he got a roaring yes from all four judges. Guess you really never know what to expect with this show huh?
If you were watching after Tape Face, I hope you weren’t simultaneously eating dinner too, because Ryan Stock and his assistant AmberLynn were impressively grotesque. Ryan shoved a pair of scissors AND a meat hook up his nose…and that’s really all you need to know to be intrigued, because the judges (except Heidi) sent them through!
Suddenly amidst all of the crazy acts, we found ourselves back in the days of American Idol where mediocre singers draw a rather harsh comment from Simon. That is, until we met 13-year-old 8th grader Laura! She surprised everyone with an insane opera routine that had some people in tears and all of the judges (and the audience) out of their seats! In fact, Laura was so incredible that Mel B used the Golden Buzzer on her. See you on the live shows, Laura!
And it all comes down to Greg from Daytona Beach, Florida. Despite his age of 61, he claimed to be the most “danger-seeking” act of the night. After quite the build up, Greg shocked everyone with what he did — because he did hardly anything at all! He jumped into an inflatable tub of shaving cream, and the judges were so not enthused. Hey, good time to wrap up an otherwise amazing show right? But not before covering the judges in shaving cream too, of course!
