Simply a-mazing! Alexander Rossi, 24, achieved something that the most skilled racing car drivers dream of their whole life in his fifth EVER race. The rookie stunned the world by winning the Indy 500 on May 29 with an incredible performance. But who is the novice racer you’ll be hearing all about over the next 24 hours? How did Alexander get his start in racing?
Alexander began his racing career positively, becoming IKF Grand National Champion in the 100cc Yamaha Class. He was then a semi-finalist in the Red Bull Formula One American Drivers Search, which earned him a scholarship at the prestigious Skip Barber Racing Skill where he would go on to hone his talents.
He’s a reserve driver in Formula One.
That’s right! Alexander still hasn’t earned his stripes on the prestigious Formula One circuit, and is an official reserve driver for Manor Racing. We’re sure that’ll change now he’s tasted success in the Indy 500!
But he has raced in Formula One before.
Alexander got his opportunity at the Singapore Grand Prix in 2015. He qualified in 20th place, which is a nicer way of saying last! But his superb driving skills saw him finish in 14th, ahead of teammate Will Stevens. He entered five of the final 7 races too, but had very little success.
His first professional win was…
Yep, you guessed it. This fairytale story just gets better. The first race he has ever won, in only his fifth start, was the Indy 500. It doesn’t really get better than that. He’s expected to walk away with a purse of just over $2 million.
What team does he drive for?
He competes in the IndyCar Series for Bryan Herta Autosport with Andretti Autosport, who must be very happy with him now.
